Central Station platform _300x180
A MULTI-MILLION pound revamp of Liverpool Central railway station is on track despite a cut in government funding.
Merseytravel has confirmed the improvements, which are vital for passenger safety, will be made, with the shortfall in funds coming from other sources. Cash to upgrade the station, which handles 60,000 passengers per day Monday to Friday, had been earmarked by the last government as part of the £50m Better Stations programme.
But the cuts made by the coalition since coming to power have slashed this fund, meant for upgrading 10 “slum” stations judged in dire need of help by former Transport Secretary Lord Adonis.
There were fears Liverpool Central’s modernisation would be shelved, but Merseytravel insisted that they, Network Rail and the European Regional Development Fund would raise the estimated £18m needed.
They also confirmed the developments would go ahead as planned, and the funding cuts wouldn’t mean a change to the project, which includes a new roof and information boards.
Network Rail said it would spend a total of £4m to upgrade lifts and platforms.
