Liverpool Arabic Arts festival gets underway

Festival manager Ngozi Ikoku said: “The Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival is designed for Arab and non-Arab audiences alike and for all ages.

“I’d like to welcome everyone to participate and to savour some of the rich and diverse culture the Middle East has to offer.”

Forthcoming festival highlights include a rare performance by one of the world’s few female maqam singers as Farida and the Iraqi Maqam Ensemble play at the Bluecoat on July 8.

Not to be beaten the Philharmonic Hall hosts Egyptian star Mohamed Mounir on July 9.

A household name in the Middle East, the 55-year-old singer and film star is known for his controversial lyrics and pop-orientated sound.

The Unison-sponsored festival will also bring together academics, writers and poets to discuss the influence of the Orient on modern British society, for listings see www.arabicartsfestival.co.uk
