A RETIRED Liverpool doctor is racing for charity after he was diagnosed with diabetes.

Dr Shiv Pande, 71, is busy training for the British 10k London run this Sunday.

The prominent GP has also worked tirelessly within the community for the last 38 years in positions like chairman of the Liverpool Faith Network and honorary secretary of the Indo British Association.

He is raising funds for the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, after he was diagnosed with the “Type One” strain.

Dr Pande said: “Now I have been diagnosed with the disease, I am doing the race for both personal and professional reasons.

“I treat a lot of people with the disease and think awareness needs to be raised and more research carried out.

“I have been training in Sefton Park to improve my fitness and my aim is to finish the course – I am not going to go overboard.

“Hopefully I will raise money for charity and improve my health in the process.”

Dr Pande has been involved in many charity fundraisers during his working life, presenting £20,000 to Mother Teresa for the orphans of the Bhopal gas tragedy on behalf of the Indo-British Association.

He said: “I have spent a lot of life raising money for various charities in organisational roles, but this is different. I am actually doing the race.

“I have had a lot of support from my friends and family, and really hope I can complete the challenge.”

The retired GP practised in Edge Hill for the majority of his career and still sits on General Medical Council committees.

Dr Pande’s target is £2,000 and he has so far raised more than £1,500.
