New sculpture unveiled in Liverpool’s Cavern Walks for Beatles Day
A LIVERPOOL artist and songwriter has unveiled his permanent sculpture to celebrate The Beatles’s musical legacy.
Mike Badger, who is well known by music enthusiasts as a founder member of 1990s band The La’s, was commissioned by Cavern Walks to produce the design to mark Beatles Day.
The sculpture, which is entitled Musical Composition, features an assemblage of reclaimed musical instruments associated with famous Beatles hits.
It includes a vintage Zenith guitar donated by Mike himself in honour of Sir Paul McCartney, who wrote some of his earliest hits on a similar Zenith guitar of the same era.
Mike, of Wavertree, who is recognised for his sculpture work using reclaimed materials, also runs workshops on recycled materials in schools and galleries.
ŠThe 48-year-old said: “It was a privilege to win the commission to produce a sculpture at Cavern Walks, in celebration of Beatles Day, because it allowed me the opportunity to combine my passions of music and art.
“This area signifies a lot of importance to me, particularly because I cut my own musical teeth in Mathew Street, near the Cavern, when I was a kid. This street meant freedom to me and I saw my first bands here.”
