Liverpool duck race raises £50,000 for Claire House

FORTY thousand ducks raced along a stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool canal for charity.

They helped raise £50,000 for Claire House Hospice along the way.

The plastic ducks had been “sold” by around 280 fundraisers who were being sponsored to abseil down the Liver Building.

Actor Paddy McGuinness started the race on the Pier Head and the person who bought the winning duck won £3,000.

The 300 metre course took some ducks 40 minutes to complete.

Claire House’s Helen Carson, who helped organise the event with Lee Seddon from Merseyside fire and rescue service, said: “Claire House is absolutely overwhelmed by the support from Merseyside for the race and helping us put on this fantastic event.

“Without the local support we wouldn’t be able to keep our doors open for the children’s families who need it most.”
