DRIVERS, schools and businesses were hit by a torrential downpour yesterday.
One car was trapped under a bridge last night at Peasley Cross Lane, St Helens, as water rose around it.
Firemen were called to a leaking roof at Anfield Children’s Centre and at least a dozen man holes blew across Merseyside under the weight of the water.
And rainfall at Huyton, an area vulnerable to flooding, was described as “torrential”.
The fire service said they received a spate of calls, but did not have to respond to any serious incidents.
The heavy rain put a dampener on the North West’s driest year since records began.
Just one week ago, water company United Utilities imposed a hosepipe ban, but last night they said it was too early to make a decision to lift it.
But rain is forecast today on St Swithin’s day.
According to legend, the weather today continues for 40 days.
