MORE than 4,000 swashbuckling pirates gathered at the city’s waterfront yesterday – but organisers face a nervous wait to find out if they were record breakers.
The attempt at the biggest gathering of pirates in any one place was one of the highlights of the second International Mersey Pirate Muster.
The event was part of the On the Waterfront festival which saw more than 50,000 descend on the River Mersey over the weekend.
Pirates were asked to bring their cutlasses and parrots to the Big Wheel where they were joined by celebrity pirates Billy Butler, ex-Brooksider Dean Sullivan and comedian Micky Finn.
The attempt to smash the world record helped raise money for the Daily Post- backed charity, Liverpool Unites.
The day’s maritime mayhem also saw tall ships battle for Liverpool’s lost treasure in the “siege of Canning Dock”, a treasure trail, comedy and music.
And There Be Pirates, a band from San Francisco, entertained the crowds with traditional shanties.
