Prime Minister David Cameron asked to help save Liverpool schools

CITY leaders were today delivering a letter to the Prime Minister urging him to back their alternative to the controversially-axed school revamp and rebuild scheme.

A straight-talking message signed by key figures was being handed to David Cameron during his visit to Merseyside.

It implored him to accept an “outline investment plan” being drafted by the city’s public and private sectors to replace the £350m Building Schools for the Future programme.

On Friday, MPs, council and church leaders, along with senior private sector representatives attended a hastily-convened summit at the Town Hall called by council leader Joe Anderson.

A draft financial package was established to potentially support the regeneration, new build and refurbishment of Liverpool schools.

City leaders said “very interesting” discussions were already taking place with the private sector with a view to investing in the city’s education system.

It was hoped significant business funding could be allied to government money to get the planned revamp of Liverpool’s crumbling schools back on track.
