Liverpool armed police siege at Old Swan house

A TERRACED house was placed under siege by armed police for almost six hours yesterday after reports that a man was inside with a firearm.

The tense stand-off centred on a house on Chiders Street, Old Swan.

Merseyside Police’s armed response unit was called there just after 2.30pm.

Crowds gathered as armed officers trained automatic weapons at an upstairs window.

The force helicopter, dog unit and traffic officers were also sent to the scene and a cordon was put in place on nearby Prescot Road.

After three hours, a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

But officers remained on high alert as they were unsure whether any others were present inside the property.

One eye witness said: “We could hear the officers shouting ‘You are surrounded by armed police’ through the windows of our house.”
