Merseyrail tunnel
RAIL bosses last night said repair work on Merseyrail’s Northern Line is likely to be the last major track renewal in Liverpool for up to three years.
The track slab renewal work, which began last week, has closed the southern section of the line between Liverpool Central and Hunts Cross.
It is scheduled to finish on August 27, a few hours before the Mathew Street Festival starts.
It is the sixth phase of a project carried out over recent years to restore worn sections, mostly curving track.
By the time it is finished, 2.2km of Liverpool’s 6.4km of underground rails will be renewed.
The latest £3.5m phase has seen three shifts of more than 20 Network Rail engineers replacing 398m of concrete beds, stretching from Central to Brunswick, the first time that part of the track has been renewed since it was laid.
