Southport Pier celebrates 150th anniversary

CROWDS gathered at the Southport Pier Pavilion to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the iconic structure.

The birthday celebrations yesterday attracted hundreds of people to commemorate its opening on Monday, August 2, 1860.

Funded by the Southport Pier Trust and Silcock Leisure Southport Watersports, the fun day recognised the importance of the Victorian structure in the growth and success of Southport.

Activities to mark the day included face-painting, magic shows, balloon-making and party games. The Pier Tram was also free.

Record-breaking crowds from across the country have visited the attraction since it was restored and re- opened in 2003, with 300,000 visitors in its first year alone.
