Liverpool actor Geoffrey Hughes battling cancer

LIVERPOOL actor Geoffrey Hughes was last night battling cancer after the disease returned.

His wife, Sue, was keeping a bedside vigil in hospital as he underwent intense radiotherapy. The TV star, known as Coronation Street binman Eddie Yeats during the 1970s and 1980s, collapsed with back pains at his Isle of Wight home on Friday.

He is thought to have been found by his wife and taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Portsmouth.

His spokeswoman said: “Geoffrey is in hospital and having radiotherapy. His wife asked for privacy at this difficult time.”

Hughes thought he beat prostate cancer a year ago.

The 66-year-old appeared in 1960s classics such as Z-Cars and The Likely Lads, and was the voice of Paul McCartney in Beatles film The Yellow Submarine. He also starred in Keeping Up Appearances, The Royle Family, Heartbeat and Skins.
