Scores of the largest known species of jellyfish washed up on Deeside

SCORES of the largest known species of jellyfish have washed up on Hoylake beach, in Wirral.

Bathers, paddlers and toddlers were urged to be on their guard after as many as 100 lion’s mane jellyfish appeared at the beach.

Hoylake resident Tim Robinson was out walking with his family when they found the huge marine animals scattered across the town’s shore.

Tim said: “There were around 100, the largest we saw was about two and a half feet in diameter and was quite big.”

Lion’s mane are the largest species of jellyfish.

They washed up on Thursday.

Steve Armitage, the RNLI sea safety officer, based at Hoylake, said: “Look at them by all means, but don’t touch or play with them.

“They do sting a lot, even after they’re dead, so keep small children well away from them and, if they do get stung, take them to a doctor straight away.”
