Liverpool’s museums help draw in big spending tourists

LIVERPOOL’S award-winning museums and galleries are a major money-spinner for the region, according to a new report.

Although entry is generally free, they act as a magnet for overseas tourists who then go on to spend cash in shops, pubs, clubs and hotels.

Nationwide, museums and galleries generate over £1bn for the UK economy, while, overall, culture brings in an estimated £4.5bn and underpins more than 100,000 jobs.

A VisitBritain survey found that Liverpool, along with London and Manchester, enjoys a “significant” share of that total.

The organisation’s report highlighted the success of Tate Liverpool and its sister galleries in London and St Ives.

They have “amassed an incredible range of art from cutting edge installations to superb collections if British art,” the report said.

Tate Liverpool executive director Andrea Nixon said: “We are extremely proud that VisitBritain has recognised not only the efforts of our gallery but also the city as a whole.

“Since 2008, we have worked hard to continue the standard set during Liverpool’s time as Capital of Culture.

“Our 2010 summer exhibition, Picasso: Peace and Freedom, has build on the success of our Klimt exhibition and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors to the city.”
