REPEATED tunnel works and closures are leaving Merseyside football match-goers fuming.
Anfield and Goodison fans alike are unhappy at recent works in the Wallasey tunnel which have left them missing the start of games.
Liverpool FC fans were affected when tunnel traffic came to a grinding halt on Sunday August 15 and Evertonians coming from Wirral faced similar delays last Saturday.
Liverpool FC supporter Kevin Power was caught in a jam when he travelled from Hoylake to give his brother a lift to Anfield.
He said: “I thought leaving at 3pm for a 4pm kick off would be plenty of time, but unfortunately as I approached the Bidston bypass the traffic had come to a grinding halt.
“We sat in traffic, for just under one mile, for nearly 55 minutes.
“On possibly one of the busiest days of the year – the first game of the season for LFC and a hot summer Sunday – they choose to close a lane to change a few light bulbs and clean the walls.” An Everton supporter from Moreton faced similar problems a week later, going to Everton’s first game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, August 21.
He said: “I set off from Moreton at 2.05pm which is plenty of time. I’ve left at 2.20pm and made it so it should’ve been more than adequate time. I got on the motorway and I was immediately stuck in a jam. I ended up nearly 25 minutes late for the match.
“I find it inconceivable that the people who plan maintenance work for the tunnels don’t take into consideration obvious peak usage times such as when a premiership match takes place at Goodison or Anfield.”
