“One was Stirling Moss being the first British driver to win the British Grand Prix in a Mercedes Benz in 1955.
“The other was a British car and driver winning the British Grand Prix in 1957.
“Merseyside went motor-racing mad when it was held here.”
Michael Ashcroft, chairman of Aintree Circuit Club, said it was important to remember Aintree’s heritage as a motor racing circuit.
He said: “This was the scene of some fantastic races.
“It was a great atmosphere and spectacle. Everything about it was magical.”
Graham Hughes, honorary president of the circuit club, was given the freedom of the site when, as a young Boy Scout, he was hired to sell newspapers at the 1954 race.
He said: “It was literally access all areas.
“You could be standing shoulder to shoulder with motor racing heroes, such as Stirling Moss, someone whom I idolised.
“I was hooked on the sport from a very early age. All the colour and noise was enthralling. Basically it was great fun.”
