Blue Coat school assistant head teacher fights sacking over conduct with A-level student

AN ASSISTANT headteacher, sacked by the city’s only grammar school over an inappropriate relationship with an A-Level student, will this week launch a bid to clear his name.

In July, Nick Barends was dismissed from the prestigious Blue Coat grammar school, over his conduct with the teenager.

An investigation found there was no suggestion he had sex with the student.

But the Daily Post understands Mr Barends, who had taught at the school for 18 years, was sacked over his conduct surrounding the girl and a perceived close relationship between the two.

Now Mr Barends is vying to clear his name.

The Wavertree-based school has agreed to conduct a two-day appeal over his sacking.

Mr Barends, in his 30s and from Liverpool, had been asked to stay off work for eight months while the top-performing Wavertree school and the council investigated his behaviour surrounding the student, who has since left.
