Stress ‘directly linked to heart disease’ for the first time

SCIENTISTS have uncovered more evidence of the harmful effects of stress on the heart.

A new study suggests high levels of the stress hormone cortisol damages the cardiovascular system and increases the risk of dying from heart disease.

Researchers said it was the first time cortisol had been directly linked to an increased risk of death from heart disease.

Cortisol is produced in stressful situations to help the body react quickly. However, if levels of cortisol are continually high, there can be damaging effects on the heart.
