Wirral Council £108m budget hole consultation gets off to flying start

PEOPLE in Wirral are to be asked about proposals ranging from increasing charges for some council services to where to make cuts, in a bid to tackle the authority’s looming budget gap.

On current figures, Wirral Council will have a difference of around £108m between income and outgoings over the next four years.

Now the council’s biggest-ever consultation – due to last six weeks – is intended to form the basis of decision-making by the Conservative Lib-Dem coalition cabinet which controls Wirral Council in a bid to tackle that budget gap.

Known as “Wirral's Future. Be a part of it”, it will visit supermarkets, schools, shopping centres, youth centres and even people’s doorsteps to try to find out what people want the authority to concentrate on.

By 9.10am yesterday, there had been more than 100 email responses and the roadshows were out and about.

Leader of Wirral Council, Jeff Green, said: “We want to make sure that more people know about the decisions the council takes and that people who want to get involved in the decisions can do so in a way that suits their lifestyle – in a meeting, online, face-to-face on the doorstep, or by post.
