WIRRAL’S council leader has pledged to make a “significant personal contribution” to the costs of a trip to China which it is hoped will cement a deal with investors in a £4bn regeneration scheme for the borough.
The council’s ruling cabinet is expected to approve plans to send Cllr Jeff Green and two senior officers to meet with up to 25 companies looking at investing in the North West and Peel’s multi-billion pound Wirral Waters scheme, which they say will create 26,000 jobs for the borough over the next several decades.
The trip next month – if approved by cabinet – is projected to cost around £7,000 and will last for 10 days. It will take place during “Peel Day” at the Shanghai World Expo on October 19.
It follows two letters to the council from Peel director Lindsey Ashworth, in which he said: “My view is that it is extremely important that a Wirral Council delegation attends the Shanghai Expo, and by this I mean senior directors and new leader Jeff Green.”
