LIVERPOOL residents overpaid £4m in council tax – earning city officials a rap on the knuckles from a spending watchdog.
The Audit Commission told the council to put “robust” procedures in place to deal with council tax overpayments by residents.
The council’s own audit and accountants committee also told officials it expected them to be proactive in future and let people know if they have paid too much tax.
The council last night insisted it always paid money back when taxpayers notified it of overpayments.
District auditor Michael Thomas wrote in a letter to the council: “Discussions with officers have confirmed that the council does not have robust procedures in place to inform residents of their council tax overpayment.”
