High Court Judge speaks on life as foster parent at Liverpool Council town hall recruitment drive

A HIGH Court judge last night spoke out about life as a foster parent, to encourage others to take up the role.

Sir Mark Hedley, a Family Division High Court judge, addressed a host of potential parents at a Liverpool Council recruitment drive in the Town Hall yesterday.

He was joined by budding fashion designer Richard Thorner, who drew on his positive experience as a foster child to drum up support.

Between 1977-1985, Liverpool University-educated Mr Justice Hedley fostered six children in addition to his own, and spoke of his pleasure in doing so.

He said: “Being a foster parent is such an important role.

“You are challenged to help your foster children through one of the most difficult times of their lives.”

When asked what the toughest aspect of foster parenting was, Sir Mark said: “It is hard to care for a child going through court proceedings, but my experience in family law prepared me for the possibility a child in my care could be returned to its parents.

“And as a foster parent, you always hope for emotional payback, but you may not always feel thanked.”

Mr Justice Hedley fell in love with Liverpool while studying at the Law School and continues to work in his Everton patch offering free legal advice.

He added: “He who never risks anything never gains. I was willing to take that risk and I am glad I did.”

Cllr Jane Corbett, cabinet member for children, encouraged others to follow Sir Mark’s lead.

She said: “Fostering is anything but easy – it takes real patience, dedication and stamina.

“But, if you think you can find space in your life for another person, why not go for it?”
