Steve Maddox
WIRRAL Council’s chief executive will today bid farewell to the authority he has headed for more than 12 years.
Steve Maddox, who first joined the council as a trainee solicitor in 1974, will step down from the top job and hand over to his deputy, Jim Wilkie.
As a young solicitor, Mr Maddox worked across all departments, including a spell in children’s services, which he described as “both harrowing and rewarding”.
He progressed through the council hierarchy before ending up in the corner office of Wallasey town hall, overlooking the Mersey.
Although not luxuriously appointed, it has afforded him a view across the river of the Three Graces and along to Cammell Laird for the last dozen years.
As he prepared to leave, Mr Maddox revealed his appointment 36 years ago was criticised by some because he was not from Wirral – he originally comes from Bootle.
His first case was a food hygiene prosecution against a defendant who had been leaving straws in milk bottles – which he won.
