Wirral £2.3million rubbish tip park plans in doubt

PLANS to create a park in Wirral on a former rubbish tip, on the banks of the Mersey, have been thrown into doubt because of cuts by the Northwest Development Agency.

Wirral Council has already warned local councillors that the £2.3m project funding to regenerate the old Bromborough waste landfill site is in doubt.

The plan, put together under the Newlands 2 programme and the Mersey Coastal Park Strategy was for extensive landscaping.

The proposals were for trees and grass to be planted, benches, paths and cycle tracks laid, and an “iconic sculpture” erected at the new park’s highest point.

Local councillor Steve Niblock has now demanded an urgent meeting involving the council, the Forestry Commission – who were to carry out the work – and Biffa.

Cllr Niblock said: “This is bitterly disappointing news after local residents have had to suffer over 20 years of tipping with the nuisance, noise and smells, to be told at the last minute that the additional funding for landscaping will not be available.

“We need urgently to discuss with Biffa what they now propose, to provide an excellent facility with outstanding views of the river and what would have been one of the jewels in the crown in the walk from the Royal Liverpool Yacht Club to Eastham.”
