Wirral Council has “no idea” which staff have mobile phones

WIRRAL Council has no idea which of its staff have tax-payer funded mobile phones, the leader of the authority has said.

The council is now cracking down on mobile phones across the authority, in a bid to cut its £¼m annual bill.

The council is currently wrestling with a gap between income and spending of £108m over the next four years.

Council staff were asked to highlight possible areas where money is being wasted, and, following 200-plus responses, council leader Cllr Jeff Green revealed the council had no idea which staff had been issued with mobile phones.

It was also found some staff were still being given an automatic monthly contribution for landline rental despite having a mobile.

Cllr Green said: “This is a ridiculous situation. The taxpayers footing the council's £¼m annual bill will, I imagine, be as horrified as I was, to discover this.”
