Warning over council tax scam

COLD callers have been targeting people in Cheshire using a council tax scam to get their personal details.

Cheshire West and Chester’s Trading Standards is now advising residents to be extra vigilant following reports of the con.

The callers, claiming to be council staff, are advising householders they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket and are due for a refund.

The bogus caller then asks for personal details – including how long the resident has lived at the property and bank account details.

Cllr Lynn Riley said: “Cheshire West and Chester Council would never telephone residents in this way to advise them of a council tax band reduction refund – we need to make it clear that any calls of this nature are a hoax. Residents are advised to stay alert.”
