GOVERNMENT penny-pinchers were accused of having “farcical” ideas about where police savings can be made.
In recent reports, carried out by the Audit Commission and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, Merseyside police were criticised for having so many officers and spending on tackling gun crime.
Police authority chair, Cllr Bill Weightman, said: “Some of the inspection boards are actually criticising us for having so many officers compared to the population size of Merseyside.
“We, and I’m sure the public agree, think it is a good thing to have as many officers as possible out there.
