Veteran broadcaster Polly Toynbee to appear at Liverpool literary festival

THE famous left-wing author and broadcaster, who David Cameron held up as an “inspiration” to the Conservative movement, will appear in Liverpool to give her verdict on 13 years of Labour rule.

Polly Toynbee will appear at the Bluecoat Arts Centre tomorrow as part of the “Chapter and Verse” literary festival.

Co-author of several books on Labour’s reign with her partner and former Guardian social affairs editor David Walker, she will appear with him to host a discussion on the theme of “The Verdict – Did Labour Change Britain?”

Speaking to the Daily Post, long-serving Guardian columnist Ms Toynbee said one of Labour’s biggest achievements was in improving the NHS.

She added: “I never thought, having covered the health service all my life, that you could get down to zero on waiting times, but we will probably watch them go up again now.

“Also free nursery education for three and four-year-olds, which is far more important than who goes to university.”

She said she feared that the Conservative government, under David Cameron, could end up more right- wing than the Thatcher government, judging by the cuts threatening public services.

“People still think he is a nice guy, and personally he probably is, but his government is going to do the most destructive things ever imagined since the foundation of the welfare state.

“It will be hard to put everything back together again.”

She added that Mr Cameron’s comments that she should be an inspiration for his party was an attempt to “totally reposition his party and make people look at him again”, although he later back-tracked to say the party would not be adopting any of the policies of the woman known as “the queen of Leftie journalism”.

An all-day pass for tomorrow’s “Chapter and Verse” events costs £25 (excluding poetry workshops).

The discussion will take place between 1pm and 2pm at the Bluecoat.
