Chancellor George Osborne says Mersey Gateway bridge will go ahead

Mersey Crossing

THE Mersey Gateway project will be spared from a raft of deep spending cuts, the Chancellor confirmed yesterday.

George Osborne said the £431m flagship engineering project to build a second Mersey crossing would go ahead as planned. The MP for Tatton, Cheshire, delivered more good news for Merseyside, announcing a project to build two aircraft carriers would continue.

Birkenhead’s Cammell Laird shipyard is already building the flight deck and hangars for aircraft super carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth in a £44m contract.

In the strongest indication yet the Gateway project is safe, Mr Osborne told the Daily Post: “The Government is determined to invest in projects in Merseyside, and every region of the UK that will make the economy strong and bring jobs and prosperity.

“That’s why we’ll be investing tens of millions of pounds in supporting the Mersey Gateway.”
