Liverpool Day brings one million visitors to Shanghai Expo

OVER a million people went to the World Expo in Shanghai on Liverpool Day – setting two new all-time records.

The single day visitor record for any World Expo was 844,000, until Saturday's astonishing turn-out smashed the record set by Expo Osaka in 1970. It also took the overall number of visitors during the six months so far to 64.6m, again beating Osaka's 1970 overall visitor record of 64.22m people.

The rush was caused by thousands of visitors with pre-paid tickets seeking to use them up before the Expo closes on October 31. It meant bumper crowds for events during the Liverpool Day programme.

Staff at the Liverpool pavilion had to lay on special buggies to shuttle visitors to the concert hall for the gala show.
