FORMER Liverpool council culture chief Gary Millar has called for spending on the arts in the city to be retained.
He gave evidence to a Commons select committee in favour of maintaining £1bn-a- year arts spending.
Cllr Millar argued cities such as Liverpool have a role to play in acting as advocates for arts, culture and heritage.
He made the point that the combined council spending on the sector outweighed that of the Arts Council.
Conservative culture select committee member Therese Coffey MP, who was brought up in the city, challenged whether it was time for funding to move away from cities such as Liverpool.
