Maghull town centre £6million revamp plans to give new lease of life

DEVELOPERS have put forward a £6m plan to breathe new life into Maghull town centre.

The rear parade of shops in Central Square, off Westway, will be demolished to create “modern and high quality” set of units.

The other buildings around the car park will be given a facelift, and the car park will be reconfigured to create 30 additional spaces.

A new cafe with outside seating area will also be built, public spaces will be improved, and new trees added under the scheme that is being submitted to Sefton Council planners this week.

Maghull Developments, which owns the site, said changing the outlay of the car park, and making it pay and display (with the first two hours free) would revitalise the centre by creating a higher turnover of shoppers.

If planning permission is granted, Maghull Developments hopes to start work on the car park next spring or summer time, and then do the major work on the buildings the year after.

Mike Hanlon, managing director of Maghull Developments, said: “We bought Maghull Central Square four years ago from Mars pension fund.

“They had owned it for 20 years without investing in the fabric of the centre and it had become tired and the existing shop outlays are not fit for purpose.

“As a busy, affluent and aspirational town, it is in demand for national retailers, but unfortunately the existing offer does not accommodate their requirements.
