THE joint general secretary of the UK’s biggest union was in Liverpool last night as part of a nationwide tour to rally support against the Government’s proposed cuts in public spending.
Merseyside-born Tony Woodley, who is currently campaigning for sole leadership of the Unite union, called the cutbacks “the most savage I’ve ever seen in my lifetime”.
Before an audience of fellow union members, Merseyside-born Mr Woodley called for a concerted campaign by all those opposed to the Government’s comprehensive spending review.
But he stopped short of calling for French-style pickets and direct action, instead urging all those hit by the cuts to fight back with demonstrations and locally-organised opposition.
He said: “This isn’t for the trade union movement, but for the whole country.”
Mr Woodley said pressure should be put on the Liberal Democrats in the hope they would desert the coalition and cause the Government to fall.
