NEW figures show Liverpool University’s Vice- Chancellor earns more than twice as much as the Prime Minister.
Sir Howard Newby’s annual salary is £343,000, compared to David Cameron’s £142,500 earnings. And figures show the pay given to the university chief has doubled over a six-year period.
The National Union of Students has criticised the salary but the University of Liverpool last night said his six-figure sum was the going rate for someone of his calibre.
A University spokeswoman said: “Vice- chancellors’ remuneration packages reflect what it takes to attract, retain and reward individuals of sufficient calibre, experience and talent in an increasingly competitive sector. Our Vice-Chancellor’s salary reflects his exceptional and significant expertise.”
