A £17m radiotherapy centre offering vital treatment to Liverpool patients is nearing completion.

The Daily Post was given an exclusive tour of the building next to the Walton Centre in Fazakerley and can reveal the project is ahead of schedule.

Marina Dalglish’s charity foundation has been supporting the build and has so far raised £3m towards the project.

Construction work should be completed in just over a month and the centre open by next February.

It will be run by Clatterbridge centre for oncology and help reduce travel times for cancer patients living north of the River Mersey.

Marina, wife of Kenny Dalglish, was diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 2004.

She had nothing but praise for the doctors and nurses at Clatterbridge who looked after her but said the journey across the water is difficult for those who live on the other side of Merseyside. The development will mean cancer sufferers in Liverpool can be treated without travelling to Wirral.

She added: “The progress and quality of the build has surpassed my expectations. Just having radiotherapy provisions in Liverpool for the first time is a huge benefit to cancer patients, but now seeing the quality of this new facility – I'm so proud to be involved, and really excited at its potential to offer cancer patients in the North West the most advanced cancer treatments available in a stunning environment.”
