MOTORISTS caught using their mobile phones had to explain themselves to pupils as their punishment.
The culprits had been caught while driving near St Aidan’s primary, in Huyton.
They were offered the choice of points on their licence and a fine, or a grilling by children at the school yesterday.
The drivers also watched a DVD of parents who had lost children in similar accidents and did a simulated drive showing the dangers of phone use.
They included Huyton father Daniel Swift, who said: “I was really nervous facing the children’s panel, but I think the whole experience has made a difference to me.”
In the last year, Merseyside Police has issued drivers with 8,306 fixed penalty notices for mobile phone use.
