A MERSEYSIDE firefighter was honoured as part of a team who saved the life of a trapped toddler during the Haiti earthquake disaster.

John Hughes, 38, a rescue technician from St Helens, was one of a team of firefighters to receive special recognition in the Pride of Britain Awards, held last night, for rescuing two-year-old Mia Charlet.

The little girl had been entombed in the ruins of a collapsed nursery for three days before the British International Search and Rescue Team came to help.

Last night celebrities and household names who were at the Daily Mirror’s star-studded event applauded their bravery.

The nine-man crew, made up of Manchester-based firefighters, had only been in Haiti a day when desperate locals alerted them to the collapsed nursery.

They inched through the debris in blistering heat with just a trowel, a metal bar and their bare hands for four hours – guided only by Mia’s whimpers.
