Merseyside transport plans ‘contain serious weaknesses’ says Knowsley Council

MERSEYSIDE’S transport plans risk choking off the region’s regeneration, a council is due to warn today.

Knowsley is poised to lambast the strategy – which will govern how the area’s buses, roads and trains develop over the next 13 years – for ignoring the needs of the road network.

A draft consultation response also brands Merseyside’s third Local Transport Plan (LTP3) for putting an “unrealistic” emphasis on “undeliverable” walking and cycling measures. It implores the authors to drop plans to earmark 10% of transport spending for walking and cycling.

Overall LTP3 has a “number of serious weaknesses”, Knowsley is due to say.

The criticism is contained in a 49-page consultation response that is due to be rubber stamped by Knowsley’s cabinet.

But councillors from Knowsley were planning to support LTP3’s vow to pursue Merseytram’s Line One, which would see a tram line connecting Kirkby, in the heart of Knowsley, with Liverpool city centre.
