Remembering fallen heroes Merseyside stands silent on Armistice Day
MERSEYSIDE fell silent as the region remembered the fallen on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Veterans lined up alongside cadets and members of the public in services and ceremonies in the city centre.
War memorials in Huyton and Southport drew large crowds as wreaths were laid to honour all those killed fighting for their country.
In Liverpool, St George’s Plateau was the focus of reflection with a service led by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Hazel Williams.
Children from St Margaret Mary’s infants school, Huyton, also sang during the service.
The annual event was felt more keenly than ever this year following a bloody 12 months in Afghanistan.
In that time the conflict claimed the lives of seven Merseyside soldiers, four of these from the 1st Battalion the Mercian Regiment, which itself lost a total of 12 men during a six-month tour of duty in Helmand Province.
Among those 1 Mercian men killed were Pte Tom Sephton, from Warrington; Colour Sgt Martyn Horton, from Runcorn; Pte Douglas Halliday, from Rock Ferry; and Pte Alex Isaac, from Eastham.
