THE chief executive of leading Liverpool discount stores group TJ Hughes stepped down last night saying: “I’ve done what I set out to do.”

Sue Tennant is credited with helping to turn around the famous national stores group.

After three years in the job, she insisted she had always intended to leave after turning the business around.

She oversaw annual profits rise from just £657,000 in January 2007 to £6.8m in the last financial year.

The 52-store nationwide group also opened a further eight retail outlets over the last 14 months.

Prior to coming to TJ Hughes she was also credited with turning around the ailing Ethel Austin stores group.

“There has been no boardroom bust up or any other upset,” Ms Tennant, 48, told the Daily Post.

“The news of my departure leaked out. I want to put the record straight. I plan to leave at the end of January, 2011, which was always my intention,”
