Baroness Helen Newlove made communities champion

THE widow of murdered father Garry Newlove is today unveiled as the Government’s new communities champion. Home Secretary Theresa May said Baroness Helen Newlove will promote how people can help make their neighbourhoods better places.

Mr Newlove, 47, was beaten to death in August 2007 by a gang of teenagers.

Since then Lady Newlove, who lived with Mr Newlove and their three children in Warrington, has campaigned against yobbish behaviour. She was made a Conservative peer in May.

She said: “We want to build an environment where neighbourhood activism can flourish by inspiring the public and local businesses to step up and work hand-in-hand with the frontline.”
