John Moores Prize artist Sigrid Holmwood takes trip to Tudor times in talk about her work Butchering a Pig

THE Walker Art Gallery travelled back to Tudor times yesterday when painter Sigrid Holmwood dressed in Elizabethan costume to give a talk about her work.

The artist, who is one of the John Moores Prize exhibitors, revealed the processes she uses to make her own paints as well as discussing her shortlisted picture Butchering a Pig.

Holmwood, 32, whose works have been bought by influential art collector Charles Saatchi, is inspired by historical re-enactment groups.

The half-Swedish, half-British artist has taken part in re-enactments herself, taking the part of an 16th century painter.

First held in 1957, the John Moores Painting Prize is the UK’s biggest painting competition and is named after Littlewoods founder Sir John Moores, who created it.

It takes place every two years, forming a key strand of the Liverpool Biennial festival of contemporary art.
