Merseyside authorities stockpile salt for another freezing winter (GALLERY)

LIVERPOOL will be better prepared to face a freezing winter this year with vast quantities of salt for gritting already stockpiled around the city.

Last year, Britain faced the worst winter for 30 years, with diminished salt supplies and overstretched local authorities unable to cope with prolonged periods of cold weather.

Although Merseyside fared better than many parts of the country, partly due to its coastal location, the Highways Agency and Liverpool City Council are determined to be better prepared this year.

The Council in particular are keen to avoid the slippery pavements and inner-city roads which resulted in emergency services receiving 21.5% more calls than in the same period the previous year.

“We’ve reviewed the gritting routes,” said a city council spokesman.

“These are aimed at keeping the city moving and cover arterial routes and access to essential services such as hospitals and key bus routes.”
