Liverpool to lose £1billion government funding over life of parliament

LIVERPOOL council will lose £1bn of government funding over the life of the Conservative/Lib-Dem Parliament, the Daily Post can reveal.

The council has already been stripped of £350m for Building Schools for the Future and £80m for Housing Market Renewal Initiative (HMRI).

City officials calculate that the council’s budget will lose £180m over four years from the Government’s revenue support grant, and up to £400m over the same period in Area Based Grant (ABG) payments aimed at tackling deprivation.

Funding for capital projects will be reduced by £128m over the same period.

Although yet to be finalised, the calculation amounts to £1.1bn – with full detail to be announced next month.

Council leader Joe Anderson said each £1m in annual income lost from the council’s core budget equates to between 30 and 35 jobs.

He has admitted he is struggling to get to sleep at night as he grapples with the huge scale of the problem.
