University of Liverpool tightens security ahead of mass student protest

UNIVERSITY officials in the city have tightened security ahead of a mass student protest over tuition fees today.

Up to 4,000 students, bolstered by secondary school pupils, are expected to take part in a noon protest organised on social networking site Facebook from the Mountford Hall home of the University of Liverpool’s Guild of Students to Liverpool Town Hall.

The march will go down Brownhill Hill, Lime Street, St John’s Lane, Whitechapel, Crosshall Street, Dale Street, North John Street and Castle Street. You can follow the march in our live blog from 11.45am by clicking here.

No roads are expected to be closed apart from Castle Street for the duration of the protest.

As well as a police presence on campus, the university is restricting access to buildings and the Harold Cohen and the Sydney Jones libraries will be closed from 10.30am to 2pm.
