Liverpool residents warned about council tax phone scam

LIVERPOOL residents were last night warned to beware of a suspected scam in which they are offered a refund of their council tax if they provide bank details.

A number of people were contacted in recent days by a woman with an American accent offering refunds of up to £7,000 for being a “good” payer.

But city leaders said it was not authorised by the council and people should not pay under any circumstances. Trading Standards have launched an investigation.

It is thought the scammers are attempting to withdraw cash from people’s accounts.
