Case study: A domestic abuse victim speaks

EMMA’S former partner was so manipulative he made her feel his constant abuse and criticism was her fault.

During their seven-year relationship, he controlled and bullied her, cutting her off from her own family and even forcing her to live off “pocket money” handouts.

Emma [not her real name] said: “You don’t notice the manipulation and that you are not your own person any more. You get to a point where you think he is right.”

Her ex-partner also attacked her physically.

She said: “There were the hands round the neck, bent over the kitchen sink backwards.”

He pressurised her not to tell the police and stopped her leaving by threatening to have their two young daughters taken away.
