Liverpool student killed by stolen car on Dale Street

A LIVERPOOL John Moores student has died after being hit by a stolen car in the city centre.

Andrew Brendan O'Neill, 20, a first year student from Northern Ireland was taken to hospital after being hit by an Audi Q5 at 3.15am on Saturday.

He died a short time later as a result of his injuries.

Andrew, from Portadown, was hit by the car near the crossing on Dale Street close to the Churchill Way flyover exit.

The Audi had been stolen earlier in the week, according to Merseyside Police,

A post mortem carried out on Saturday afternoon revealed that he had died as a result of multiple injuries.

The city centre road was closed off early on Saturday as police gathered evidence from the scene.

Andrew had been studying chartered surveying and police said his family were travelling to Liverpool.

Officers from Merseyside Police say they are keen to trace the movements of the car, a black Audi Q5 registered YP59 YXX since it was stolen from Speke on Thursday.

DI Julie Milburn said: “This was a senseless and selfish act which has cost a young man his life.

“Andrew had a bright future and was much loved by his fellow students in Liverpool.

“The manner that this vehicle was driven put the lives of all those who were in the Dale Street area during the early hours of Saturday morning in jeopardy and in this case the consequences have been catastrophic.

“I would ask for anyone who saw this vehicle and its occupants since it was stolen, but in particular during the early hours of Saturday morning to come forward.”
