Climate change demo at Pier Head to mark opening of Cancun conference

CLIMATE change campaigners donned David Cameron and Barack Obama face masks in an event staged at the Pier Head.

It was held to mark the opening of the UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico.

Campaigners said the demonstration was held to remind world leaders to put people and not the interests of big businesses first.

Among those taking part were members of Oxfam, Christian Aid and CAFOD.

James Tyrell, from CAFOD Liverpool, said: “Cancun could make a huge difference, it just takes world leaders to take action, rather than just going through the motions.

“We need to show Chris Huhne, the UK Secretary of State for climate change, that we are passionate and help people get involved so that Cancun isn’t another disappointment.”

Sarah Brice, from the University of Liverpool Oxfam Society, added: “We need a fair and binding deal so we can help those people who are affected by climate change.”
