Big Freeze set to last another day, as Merseyside escapes the worst of the weather

A LIGHT dusting of snow fell across Merseyside yesterday afternoon, as temperatures stayed below freezing – and are predicted to fall to -6 °C again tonight.

The region escaped the worst of the snow chaos that has crippled much of the country, as public transport in Merseyside operated normally.

Despite severe weather warnings still in place last night for ice on the roads, there were no reports of major crashes caused by the treacherous conditions.

But the North West Ambulance Service said their paramedics were finding minor roads hazardous.

A spokesman said: “The pressure the crews are facing is the road conditions and having to negotiate icy back streets.”

There was minor disruption at Liverpool airport as four flights were cancelled due to snow problems elsewhere.

John Lennon airport closed for 20 minutes around 4pm yesterday for snow to be cleared.

Many Liverpool FC fans were unable to make it to the match in Bucharest because of disruption at other airports.
